“SCHOOL ON THE HILL” FALL-SPRING RETREATS
On the mainland, near historic Wolverine Michigan...
IMAGINE it’s the end of the Civil War in the forest
and lake country of northern Michigan. Children are
coming in from all around to the new red schoolhouse
on top of the hill, near the timber town of Wolverine.
Soon it will be the turn of the century, and the
“school on the hill” will serve as the meeting place
for local town folks. Now imagine the schoolhouse
today lovingly preserved, on ten beautiful acres of
hilltop surrounded by forests. There is a stone hearth
in the great room, with ample yoga and body prayers
space for guests & sojourners on original hardwood
floor (still bearing the marks of children’s play.) There is a spacious cathedral ceiling held aloft by
the axe-hewn beams. And there is light and forest all
around you streaming in through the large school house
windows.
LANDSCAPE and ACCOMMODATIONS Our great room has an open
loft bedroom above it for guests and sojourners to
sleep, and there is a wonderful kitchen and dining
area downstairs. We have a full bath, laundry room,
and a front porch overlooking old Ford Road. From the
back deck you sometimes spy elk crossing our spacious
hilltop back yard from the nearby Pigeon River wilds.
There is a volley ball net out back too, and you can
walk out further to our second open knoll and pitch
your tent in the ceremonial circle. That circle is a
quiet secluded place, a natural round opening in the
forest that is perfect for fire and drum gatherings. There are trails through the
forest below us, with a
stream and natural marsh area. “School on the Hill” is
located east of historic Wolverine between the
pristine Sturgeon and Pigeon rivers near the Pigeon
River State Forest, just 3 miles northeast off I-75.
UNIQUE BENEFITS OF YOUR STAY AT “SCHOOL ON THE HILL”
Your stay in our historic schoolhouse carries all of
the energy, history and architecture of 140 years of
living, with beautiful axe-hewn beams, original
hardwood flooring, and a vaulted cathedral ceiling in
the great room; plus gorgeous natural views from the
dining area, front porch and back deck. You also have
access to 10 private acres of woodlands and hilltop
trails, with a naturally secluded outdoor “open
circle” area surrounded by trees. It’s a great place
for solitude, study, self-reflection, and snowshoeing
during the Winter.
STUDY, TOURS, AND OUTDOOR EXPLORATIONS Inquire with
Seamus about the growing list of curricula, tours, and
studies available at the “School on the Hill.”
Visitors with outdoors interests enjoy a nearby stream
and natural marsh area, plus proximity to the pristine Sturgeon River and
Pigeon River State Forest areas -
all great places for hiking and wildlife viewing in
late fall or early spring (fishing & tubing, canoeing
& kayak rentals are available nearby.)
WARM WELCOME Most of all we enjoy welcoming and
comforting folks in our unique north country home,
offering them solitude and beauty in nature, kindness
and gentle Body Prayers movement meditations in the
morning, and new learnings for the spirit. We open up our “School on the Hill” home to
guest sojourners on select weekends between mid-September and mid-May.
