Smartmusic Information

 

There are 6 computers for students to use in the band room suite.  These computers run an application titled SMARTMUSIC.  Among the numerous tools that smartmusic provides,  students can perform their assigned band music and exercises with musical accompaniment. These "performances" by your child are recorded and submitted to the application for later evaluation and feedback.  Smartmusic also provides an online grade book where students, parents and myself can access student records via the web. In addition, it will assist students in keeping track of what assignments they have completed and the progress on those assignments.  There is no cost to you for your child to use the program at school. However, this year, I am strongly encouraging all students to purchase the program for home use.  There are many features besides the evaluation part of it that will give your child more motivation to practice.  This plus the reality of large classes will help your child to complete assignments and use the program.  If  you wish to have the program at home, a school sponsored subscription is available for $30 plus the cost of the microphone. Many families choose to purchase Smartmusic each year for their children.  The program is free, you pay a yearly subscription fee.  The subscription code where you can purchase a school sponsored subscription for $30 per year is NMSbands08.  Go to the Smartmusic website and enter this code in the purchase box to get the discount.  Please remember that your children are able to use the computers in the band room free of charge.

In order to use the new features of Smartmusic version 10, Smartmusic will require students to “enroll” for their class through the Smartmusic program itself. This only needs to be done once. Smartmusic uses an email address for the login name. It must be an email address. Although I prefer that the parent email is used, students may use a personal email address, or a parent’s email address for the login name. Notifications for assignments, due date reminders and other information I enter in the system will be sent to this email address. If you do not have an email address, or do not wish to have your child use a personal email or your own, I will provide you with a login name that will look like an email address to Smartmusic but will only be used for a login name.

During the enrollment process, the program will ask for personal information. Students will be required to fill out the following personal information:

• First and Last name

• Street Address

• City, State and Zip

• Grade

• Gender

• Instrument

• Student ID # (Van Buren Public Schools Student #)

In order to make this process quicker and easier for the large numbers in the band classes, I am asking you to fill out this enrollment form and permission slip. Having this information with them will assist students when they enroll on the computers during band the first few days of school. I am also asking you sign a permission slip. The company requires parent oversight for children under the age of 13. There is a checkbox that must be marked, indicating that the child is 13 or older. With your permission, I will be monitoring the enrollment process of your child. The information you provide on the permission slip will be what is entered into the enrollment page within Smartmusic.
