When I went out to agility I wasn't expecting to go home with a coonhound. I went to the novice agility class to help instruct like any other Tuesday. I walked into the ring being careful to shut the gate tight so there wouldn't be any escapes, and walked over to see what was going on. When a friendly coonhound, standing on her hind legs front feet ontop of the x-pen, tail wagging, begged for attention. Caryn often brought one of her dogs to class, so I went over to pet her. She rubbed her head on my arm asking for more, and I gave it to her.
At this time Caryn happend to look over and see and told me her name was Melody and why don't I take her out and go through the class with her. Always happy to run a dog I said "ok" and joined the class with Melody. She was great. She did everything I asked her to do and was happy to do it.
After class I played with Melody a little longer. Caryn came up to me and mentioned how happy Melody was. She said that she hadn't seen Melody that happy the whole time she had her. She went on to tell me how she got Melody. Apparently someone begged her to take the dog. Caryn finally gave in and took her. Melody had been abused and Caryn told me how scared she is of strangers, especially men.
Caryn couldn't get over how happy Melody was with me. We sat in the obedience building and talked for awhile. Eventually Caryn asked me if I would like to have a coonhound. Slightly shocked I said that I would. I called mom and talked her into it, and Melody went home with me that evening. Melody has been with us for a little over a year now. It seems like she has always been here. And yes, I still love her.
