Yes, dogs get allergy and it can be just as uncomfortable for dogs as it is for people. Allergy in dogs is quite different than allergy in people. In dogs the allergens cause skin problems instead of nasal congestion. These problems cause poor hair coats, chronic ear infections and acral lick granulomas, a spot where the dog has been licking constantly creating a sore, to name a few. Thyroid disease may add to the problem as well.
Symptoms of allergy in dogs are: scratching, licking, chewing or biting feet, hot and inflamed ears but no infection and acral lick granulomas.
Treating allergy is very frustrating and difficult. There is no pill they can take to cure it, and often the pills they do take only make like a little more comfortable. Melody is on Chlorapharnamine twice a day, Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, and weekly baths with an anti-fungal shampoo.
Because of her allergy Melody has also picked up a ringworm fungus. Ringworm is not a worm, but a fungus that causes a ring on the skin, hence the name ringworm. We have been having a terrible time getting rid of it, and it may take a really cold winter for us to get a handle on it.
I am going to have her thyroid levels checked soon, because a low thyroid only adds to the skin problems, as well as a weight problem. I will update this page as soon as I know more.
Melody's thyroid came back in the normal range. So I've just been giving A LOT of baths and that seems to be keeping things under control.
