ayla

Yes that's right, Ayla was incontinent. It all began about my Sophomore year of High School (2000), when I woke up to a soggy bed....yuck!

It's early in the morning and I'm changing sheets, blankets, and flipping my mattress over to the other side, so it doesn't smell and it isn't wet. Well ok mostly so it isn't wet, because it'll all ways smell a little now.

The next morning I told my mom that Ayla went pee during the night. She laughed at me and told me "That will teach you for not letting her out to potty before you go to sleep." I didn't remember if I had taken her out or not, I could have sworn I had, but maybe I did really forget!

The next night I made dang sure I took her out to potty, and watched her go so I KNEW she went. I even wrote a not on the white board saying that I took Ayla out before bed and she went potty...incase I forgot in the morning.

Unfortunately morning, for me, again came with a wet soggy bed way before my alarm went off. This time it was worse that the night before, and I remembered taking her out and I remembered seeing her go potty! I just didn't understand why she was going potty in bed.

I could see Ayla didn't know what was going on either...there was that look in her eyes that said "Really mom I didn't know I did that until I woke up! Really!" And of course I believed her...what kind of a mom would I be if I didn't?

I suffered through nearly a month of soggy beds and getting up way to early before my mom took Ayla to the vet to see what was wrong with her. I was so relieved that she took her, I really didn't know what to expect. Ayla was only three years old, certainly not old enough for anything obvious to pop into mind.

When mom got back from the vet (I couldn't go because the appointment was during school hours, and mom wouldn't get me out.) she had a bottle of pills and told me to give her one three times a day for the first two weeks, and then two a day for the rest of her life.

The PPA did the trick for a few years. Ayla has began to potty in bed again mid 2001. Although not as bad as before, it was still enough to have to change the bedding (I had a plastic sheet on my bed by then). So i started giving her two pills at night and one in the morning.

PPA went off the market when some lady had a stroke because of it. PPA was used in nasal sprays, and I guess that's how it happened. Anyway because PPA was not FDA approved for veterinary use we really can't get it anymore.

We did find something else that worked. It's called diethyl-stilbestrol (I have no idea how to say that) or DES for short. It's basically just some hormones that are lost when dogs are spayed. Some dogs do well without it, others like Ayla, do not. It was supposed to be a once a week thing, but she wasn't responding to that, so we tried 2 and that didn't work so well either. 3 however have seem to do the trick. She got one Monday, Wednesday and Friday and she was leak free.

Here are some informational links. I know the vet told me all this stuff but I can't ever remember all of it. So your best bet for good information on the workings of canine incontinence is to check out the following links!
