Ortaköy-Sapinuwa Epigraphical Research / OSER (since 1999)
Description of the Project:
____________________
The Hittites, an Ancient Indo-European people, built up an empire in Anatolia (now a part of the Republic of Turkey) which was very powerful from about 1600-1200 B.C. Their capital was Hattusa (modern Bogazköy). We have a large number of original documents from the Hittites who used cuneiform script written on clay tablets. They are mostly discovered in the royal archives in Hattusa, and the scholars were depent on this only source of Hittite documents for many years. But the discovery of other important Hittite city Sapinuwa (modern Ortaköy) in 1990 brought a new source for Hittite studies.
In the excavations at Ortaköy (situated 55 km. northwest of Çorum, in Northern Central Anatolia), in the years 1990 to 2000, more than 3500 clay tablets written in cuneiform were unearthed beside significant archaeological finds. The epigraphic finds constitute the second largest number of Hittite tablets discovered in Anatolia next to the archives in the Hittite capital Bogazköy-Hattusa. The excavators of Ortaköy believe that this city was a second capital of the Hittites, or a royal residence, for a specific period, namely during the Middle Hittite Kingdom, ca. late 15th century B.C. Although the tablets are written mostly in Hittite, there are also documents in other Ancient Near Eastern Languages, primarily Sumerian, Akkadian, Hurrian and Hattian. The genres of the texts are various: vocabularies (in Sumerian-Akkadian-Hittite), bilinguals (in Hurrian-Hittite and Hattian-Hittite), letters, lists of persons, tablet-catalogs, oracular texts, prayers, rituals and festival descriptions. Most of the epigraphic finds are dated to the last phase of the Hittite Middle Kingdom (ca. 1400-1380 B.C.). This period is very poorly documented in the sources of Bogazköy. Therefore, it is expected that the texts from Ortaköy will fill a big gap in our present knowledge of Middle Hittite history, language, and writing tradition. They are significant not only for Hittite history, culture and language, but they will also contribute to a much better understanding of other Ancient Near Eastern Languages (Sumerian, Akkadian, Hurrian, Hattian). The bilingual and vocabulary texts are especially important in enlarging our knowledge of these languages.
The work on the Ortaköy epigraphic finds was begun in 1990 by a Turkish team led by Prof. Aygül Süel, excavator of Ortaköy and member of Ankara Üniversitesi Dil ve Tarih-Cografya Fakültesi. I joined this team in January 1998, and since then I have been contributing to the studies on the multi-lingual documents (in Hattian, Akkadian, Sumerian etc.) within my personal project “Ortaköy-Sapinuwa Epigraphical Research (OSER).” This project has been financially supported by American Research Institute in Turkey in 1999 and 2000 with research fellowships.
Our Ankara-Chicago cooperation is expected to be very fruitful for Hittite lexical studies. Indeed, the results that we have achieved to date are encouraging. The activities of the season 1999 are briefly reported as “Epigraphical Studies from Hittite Sapinuwa” in ARIT Newsletter 27 (Spring 1999) p. 7, and read as papers at the 4th International Congress of Hittitology in Würzburg (Germany) in October 1999 with Turkish title “Hattice Arastirmalarinda Son Durum.” The first results of the epigraphic studies will be released by Oguz Soysal and Aygül Süel in a joint article “A Practical Vocabulary from Ortaköy,” which is currently in press for an American Festschrift. As part of the work for 2000, we are now preparing other three joint articles for publication, in which we will continue to make the Ortaköy tablets accessible to the community of scholars in the humanities. The tentative English - Turkish titles are: “The Hattian-Hittite Foundation Rituals from Ortaköy / Ortaköy’de Bulunmus Hattice-Hititçe insa Ritüelleri (I-III).”
