Joseph Reed was born in Virginia, birthdate unknown at this time. He
married Nancy McCarty February 2, 1804 in Tennessee. Nancy McCarty was born
December 3, 1789 in Augusta Co., Va. and died 1875 in Tennessee. Joseph is
found on Tax rolls for Greene County, Tennessee in 1783 as having five
horses, two cattle and a total of 52 Pounds currency. Jefferson County, Tenn
Deed Index, Volume C Page 192 list Joseph Reed as selling to John Reed 55
acres in Greene and Jefferson County; filed June 17, 1796.
Early land grants in Tennessee:
Joseph Reed - 84 acres - February 2, 1810
Mitchell Reed - 227 acres - May 22, 1810 (adjoining lands of Joseph
Reed)
Jeremiah Reed - 58 acres - May, 1810 (just south of land of Joseph and
Mitchell Reed)
John Reed - 214 acres May 23, 1810, 122 acres September 15, 1808.
The connection between the above Reed men in Sevier County has not been

Wilson's Knoxville Gazette, Monday 6 September 1812, printed this
notice:
..."William Mitchell, Sheriff of Sevier County, Tennessee to sell
interests of John Reed, Nancy Reed, Jeremiah Reed and Gracy Reed, heirs of
Joseph Reed, decd. 34 1/2 acres in Poor Valley, adjoining John Williams and
Mitchell Reed Sr."

August 30, 1806 in Tn.
3. Mary M. Reed born June 19, 1808 in Tn; died June
19 1852

March 4, 1810 in Tn.
In 1812 age the age of 24 Nancy McCarty Reed was a widow with three
young children. On a neighboring farm was an old widower, Alexander
Campbell, he was the father of 14 children. Nancy and Alexander were married
on January 3, 1813 and Alexander, who was a Quaker was dismissed for
marrying contrary to discipline. Nancy and Alexander had two children:
1. Eli Campbell born August 29, 1814 in Sevier County, Tn.
2. Levi Campbell born July 9, 1816 in Sevier County, Tn.
Nancy was only married for a short time when she again found herself
alone and now she had six children. So, at the age of 31, Nancy married for
the third time. She married Bazeel Bowen on May 21, 1820 and they had three
children:
1. Nelson Bowen born February 4, 1821 in Sevier County, Tennessee
2. Narcissa Bowen born February 7, 1823 in Sevier County, Tennessee
3. Dianna E. Bowen born December 14, 1824 in Sevier County, Tennessee
In 1830 Nancy is found on the Census for Sevier County, Tn. as the Head
of Household. Living with her are her four youngest children. I have been
unable to trace Nancy past this time.
