Hubbardton
Rutland County
Vermont
A Short History Hubbardton was chartered on 15 June 1764 by Benning Wentworth, Governor of New Hampshire to Thomas Hubbard and others. Settlement started in 1774 with the families of Uriah Hickok and William Trowbridge. In 1775, they were joined by the families of Samuel Churchill, William Spaulding, Abdial Webster, Benjamin Hickok, Benajah Boardman, Jesse Churchill, and John Sellek. In 1777, prior to the Battle of Hubbardton the women and children fled and some of the men were taken prisoner by the Indians. After the Revolutionary War, settlement restarted with 20 families in the town by 1784.
Hubbardton is well known as the site of the Battle of Hubbardton in the Revolutionary War. This was the only battle of the Revolution actually fought on Vermont soil.
