Remembering Jill Martin - 1940-2009
from the May, 2009 "Chronicles" (Warren Township Historical Society bi-monthly newsletter)

   I first met Jill Martin at Warren Township High School. My wife and I attended an open house to meet our children's teachers. Jill was teaching their English class. Later I met Jill at the Lake County Discovery Museum, where we were both volunteers. In 1993 Jill came to the historical society as a volunteer to help with the work we were doing. She had many good ideas on displays, programs and general operations.
   For many years Jill was the editor of our newsletter, She would write the stories and editorials. Then I would set up the cover and print the newsletter, and get it ready to mail. Jill also served for many years as secretary and then as vice president. She also arranged for speakers for our programs, including the history of the Underground Railroad and the Civil War.
   In 2005, we got a letter from the Arcadia Publishing Company stating that if we would write a history, with photographs of our area, they would print the book. The books would be sold in stores in our area.
   At first, I didn't think I wanted to do a book, but Jill said we should. I went through all our many photographs to find ones we wanted to use. Jill would write a short story about the people and places pictured in the photographs from our archives, to be included in our book. There had to be minimum and maximum number of pages.
   Jill had worked with the high school students on their school annual, so she knew how to get started.
   After we had the manuscript completed, Mike Weiland put it on a Digital CD to be sent to Arcadia Publishing Company.
   One of Jill's hobbies was quilting. She started a quilting group that meets at Mother Rudd's house on Friday afternoon.
   She also did spinning of wool and other fibers into yarn that she could dye and use for knitting.
   Jill served as a volunteer at the Warren Newport Library and had an interest in Genealogy.
   I am sure Jill had many more interests and hobbies that I never knew about.
   With all the many things that Jill did, she will be missed by many people.
