WELCOME
TO THE HOMEPAGE FOR
SHATTERED HEARTS

I think most of us have had our hearts broken at one time or another because of some form of abuse. We often feel like the pieces will never come back together again. Others around us seem happy-normal-while we feel different and isolated. We usually wear a cheerful mask in public so that we can feel normal, too, and hide our pain. There are too many of us wearing that mask--too many women, too many children, and too many men. One of my favorite blues groups is Saffire-the Uppity Blues Women. They have a song about how everybody gets the blues. Everybody also is a possible abuse survivor. It doesn't just happen in poor families. It doesn't just happen in working class families. It doesn't just happen in families with a single parent. I've met people from every possible category who are abuse survivors.
All of us need a safe place to remove that mask and share our true feelings with others. We need to know that others also understand how it feels to experience the pain of abuse. We need to know that we are not different or isolated. We need to hear from others that its okay to feel the way we do no matter what the abuse was or how long ago it happened. We need to know we can talk about it without risking a response like "Get over it." We do get over it; but I don't think that happens until we are able to remove that mask. I don't think we 'get over it' by trying to forget it ever happened and 'get on with our lives' either.
I'm not a health care professional or social worker. I'm just someone who finally found a way to remove the mask. I haven't gotten over it yet; but I have been able to get on with my life in many ways. I have been asked to provide a safe place on the internet for others who have been abused or are being abused to share experiences and feelings. I hope that Shattered Hearts will be that place for you.
Shattered Hearts is available in different ways so that it can serve the needs of more people. There is a listserv, a forum and this homepage with a chat room. All of these will be open to men, women and children. You do not need to ever give your real name. For people who don't want to use an email address, there is the forum and/or the chat room. If you want to join the listserv, you can either use your email address, or you can open an email account with a free service like hotmail and remain anonymous that way.
