- Classical MIDI Archives
Before you get your hopes too high that this is a way to avoid buying
classical CDs, these MIDI files will never equal a recording of an
actual performance with real instruments (as far as I can tell, only piano
synthesis comes anywhere close to sounding real). But if you want to
hear what a piece sort of sounds like before going out looking for a CD,
this is a good place to start. The collection is fairly extensive.
- CD Now
If you look at the bottom, right-hand corner of the page, you'll
find a "search classical" button. This allows you to search for
CDs based on composer, performer, conductor, instrument,
orchestra/ensemble or record label/catalog number. Even if you
don't intend to buy anything over the web, this is a great way
to find out what's available.
- Classical Net
The entry page states:
"Classical Net provides a point-of-entry into a wide array of
informational files about classical music - over 4200 files at
Classical Net and over 2500 links to other classical music web
sites." It also contains a
composer timeline
(both in textual and graphical formats), as well as composer lists sorted
on several different parameters.
On the subject of science (though not fiction), the chemist in me can't resist giving a URL for a site that shows the
shape of atomic orbitals.
