Ellen FitzSimmons Steinberg

LIFE-LONG LEARNER

My family

Proud parent of six, not one of whom is an axe-murderer or public drooler.

The place I live

River Forest, Illinois is a small community (< 12,000 people) near the Des Plaines River. It is ten miles west of Chicago, and a wonderful place to live and raise children. Apparently my great-grandparents thought so, too, because they settled here before the village was even incorporated.

My interests

My interests are many and varied: antiques, Japanese wood block prints, pre-Columbian art, reading, gardening, studying museum collections, and working with children. My degrees include Anthropology (B.A.); Bio-archaeology (M.A.); Curriculum and Instruction (Certificate of Advanced Studies); Curriculum Design (Ph.D.), and Gardening (Hands-On experience only).

In 1999, my book, "Teach Me: An Ethnography of Adolescent Learning," was published by International Scholars Publications (ISBN: 1573094005). It details 2 years of research into what young, urban adolescents feel is worthwhile knowing and experiencing.

In March 2004, my second book, "Irma: A Chicago Woman's Story, 1871-1966" was published by the University of Iowa Press simultaneously in both hardcover (ISBN: 0877458960) and softcover (ISBN: 0877458944) formats. This book was created out of excerpts from the diaries, journals, & memoirs that a Chicago woman kept. It covers the time of The Great Chicago Fire until the middle of the Vietnam conflict.

And, in September, 2007, my third book, "Learning to Cook in 1898: A Chicago Culinary Memoir," is scheduled to debut via Wayne State University Press. It sets recipes written and collected during 1898 in Chicago into socio-economic and historical context, plus updates the recipes for the modern cook.

Working with children and gardening in the Chicago area keeps me humble. Working with Peruvian mummies from the site of Ancon, which is what I do in my more lucid moments, is MUCH easier!! But writing keeps me out of trouble!
