Roseanne Roseanne & Dan Conner

DISCLAIMER:  I am not Roseanne, and never claim to be!  This site is not in any way endorsed by nor linked to Roseanne, The Roseanne Show, Viacom, or Carsey-Werner.  It is merely a site by a fan of the half-hour Roseanne situation comedy that aired from 1988 to 1997.  The information contained herein is comprised of information gathered by me in conjunction with my personal observations and thoughts.

To those of you who have written me in the past few months, I would like to say a BIG THANK YOU!  You are the reason I have done this site — and the fact that I love Roseanne!  Because I've received so many letters, I have added a new link that features some of the recurring questions I've been getting.  Click Letters to go there.

I have been a Roseanne fan ever since it debuted in 1988.  I am currently working on a complete Roseanne library, which I hope to have completed some day!  Many obstacles have prevented me from finishing this feat within the past year or so. Between my VCR not working properly when I went on vacation last year and the TV stations changing their schedules from time to time, it has been a real challenge getting the episodes I am missing.  Additionally, TBS likes to censor certain episodes.  Here's an example:

In episode 5.14, Jackie is using the lack of boxes as an excuse to stall moving out of her abusive boyfriend's apartment.  Roseanne says, "Jackie, we can get more boxes:  I will whore myself in every grocery store in this town if that's what it takes, okay?!"

You won't hear the second half of that line on TBS.   However, if you have closed-captioning, you can see it briefly!  Pay attention!

There are other episodes where they feel the need to censor lines, like 5.16 when Roseanne meets David's mother for the first time.   Read their lips!

Some episodes they don't even show at all!

Finally, the 9th season has been released into syndication.  The local station here showed them all in August, with the exception of the Thanksgiving and Christmas episodes.  Those, will be shown in the days leading up to the holidays, which is standard operating procedure for all of the holiday episodes.   I still have much editing to do to get all of the episodes in order.   I have only completed 5 tapes thus far, and with two completed tapes per season, that leaves a lot of editing to do!

The Illinois Connection

While Lanford was a fictional town in Illinois, many references were made to real cities, presumably nearby:

3.12 Becky once had a date with a boy who just moved from Evanston.
2.17 Roseanne's parents lived in Moline.
4.03 Jackie went to trucking school in Elgin.
6.08 Jackie lied about Dan having a meeting in DeKalb, then later said it was in Elgin.
5.10 Darlene goes to a concert in Rockford with neighbor Molly Tilden.
3.21 The Bowmans, the Conners' neighbors, moved from (and later back to) Chicago.
4.18 Darlene and David skipped school to go to a comic book convention in Chicago.
4.18 Jackie and Roseanne reminisced about sneaking off to Bloomington to a frat party.
3.12 Jackie and Roseanne confessed to their mother that they went to a party in Chicago while their parents were out of town.
3.19 It took Dan and Roseanne 6 hours to drive home through a snowstorm after their flight to Las Vegas was cancelled and they had to spend the night in Chicago.
4.07 O'Hare International Airport is mentioned in the episode when Dan and Roseanne finally get to go to Las Vegas.
8.25 Dan mentions to David about having gone camping in Wisconsin up in Door County.
6.24 Fred whisks Jackie away to Lake Geneva (Wisconsin) when he proposes to her.

The Bewitched Connection

3.21 When Jackie asked Roseanne what the new neighbors (the Bowmans) are like, Roseanne replied, "Well the husband, Darrin, he's in advertising; and then they have a real cute little girl, Tabitha; but the wife, I don't know, something's wrong with her, I think she's a witch!"
4.09 When Roseanne was quitting smoking, she commented to Jackie that TV is what taught their generation to smoke; among others, "both Darrins smoked."
6.09 At the end of Sarah Chalke's first episode in the role of Becky, the Conners were watching Bewitched.

Bewitched theme plays
ROSEANNE:  I can't believe they replaced that Darrin!
JACKIE:  Well, they had a hit show; they figured they could get away with anything.
BECKY:  Well, I liked the second Darrin much better!

HrzLinePurGrnTxt02.gif (2524 bytes)

The Sherwood Schwartz Connection

1.20 When Roseanne asks Dan what he would do if she had died in the tornado, ". . . a single father with three kids?"  He replies, "Probably go out and look for Florence Henderson!"
3.09 D.J. is watching Gilligan's Island when Jackie catches him giving Gilligan "the finger."
6.13 Florence Henderson (Brady Bunch) guest stars as a woman whose family owns a chain of bakeries.
7.25 Dan & Roseanne share fantasies about the future; Roseanne's features a spoof of Gilligan's Island.  Tina Louise, Bob Denver, Russell Johnson and Dawn Wells all make special appearances at the end of the show.

Inconsistencies

2.16 Ziggy says he got his kids "the old-fashioned way."

ZIGGY:   "I got me two boys."
ROSEANNE:  "Get outta here!"
ZIGGY:  "Yep — checked 'em at birth, two boys."

3.25 When Dan asks how Ziggy's kids are, he says they're with their father now — they weren't his kids.
3.23 Leon's lover is first introduced as Jerry. 4.05 Leon's lover's name is now Steven — presumably due to the introduction of Jerry Bowman, the Conners' neighbor.
4.14 Mark's brother's first name was originally Kevin. 4.18 Mark's brother's first name is David.
6.08 Dan explains to Phyllis Zimmer that Roseanne punched him in the mouth when she learned of their one-night stand back in high school. 1.07 Roseanne was really upset with Dan when she learned of his one-night stand with "Phyllis 'Gag Me' Zimmer" — but it never came to blows.
2.24
6.06
In the early seasons, the basement was accessed by a door in the kitchen (to the right of the stove). 6.24
7.02
9.23
In the later seasons, the basement is accessed through the service porch, which seems unrealistic, considering Dan added it on himself.  In the final episode, the basement door is once again located in its old place by the stove.
6.24 Dan, attempting to be romantic, gives Roseanne an "only slightly-used dishwasher." 8.20 Roseanne is washing dishes by hand again (the dishwasher must have broken).
6.25 Jackie borrowed shoes from Roseanne for her wedding. 8.23 On Darlene's wedding day, Jackie confesses to having not done the traditional "something old, something new. . ." when she got married.
6.05-
6.19
Jackie's pregnancy lasted less than 5 months from the date it was announced. 7.01-
8.06
Roseanne's pregnancy lasted over 13 months from the date it was announced.
7.11 Roseanne's doctor said she was going to have a girl, and the storyline maintained that up until the baby was born. 8.06 Roseanne gave birth to a boy.
5.24 Darlene and David "do it" for the first time . . . in Darlene's bedroom. 8.20 David says he had planned to propose to Darlene down at some bridge where they first . . . .
7.25 As David prepares to graduate from high school, Dan and Roseanne remark about how excited they are that someone from their house is actually graduting from high school.  While it's never actually mentioned in any prior episode, my assumption has always been that Dan and Roseanne both graduated — it's never said that they dropped out.

Did You Know?

In the first episode, D.J. was played by Sal Barone.  I don't know why they didn't keep him on, but I certainly think that Michael Fishman was a good choice for the role.  On more than one occasion it is mentioned that he resembles Roseanne.
D.J.'s full name, David Jacob, is mentioned in only two episodes — 2.13 and 4.25.
The father of Laurie Metcalf's real-life baby is Matt Roth, who played her boyfriend Fisher in the 5th season.
Roseanne's first husband, Bill Pentland, not only worked behind the scenes in the first couple seasons, but also played neighbor Fred Meeker in episode 1.10.
Laurie Metcalf, Lecy Goranson, and Sara Gilbert are all originally from Illinois.
Zoe Perry, who played Young Jackie in episodes 5.07 and 7.19 is Laurie Metcalf's daughter.
Martin Mull worked behind the scenes as Creative Consultant before joining the cast as Leon Carp.
Another member of the behind-the-scenes crew, Bob Nickman, showed up in numerous episodes: as a waiter in 6.21, as a hairdresser in 7.06, and as the "Lunch Box Girls" customer at the end of 7.07, to name a few.
Patrika Darbo, who played Dan's dream woman in 3.10, played Roseanne in Fox's unauthorized biography of Roseanne and Tom Arnold.
Kay Arnold, who played Roseanne's dad's mistress (4.11 & 5.16), is Tom Arnold's aunt.
Benjamin Thomas who played a cop in 8.08 was Roseanne's third husband.

Letters

I have received numerous letters over the past few months — some of which have been asking the same questions.  So, I thought I would address some of those questions here.

Q:  What happened to the original Becky?

A:  Lecy Goranson left the show to attend college.  Her college schedule didn't permit her to continue on the show as a regular.  She did, however, come back to the role of Becky in the 8th season, which was initially planned to be the final season.  When it was decided that the show would continue for one more season, she chose to return to college.  Sara Gilbert ("Darlene") also attended college during the show's run, but her schedule was a little more conducive to working part-time on the show.

Q:  Was Roseanne [Barr] ever married to her co-star John Goodman?

A:  At the beginning of episode 8.07, "The Fifties Show," Roseanne, imitating Allistair Quinn, introduces herself as Roseanne Barr Pentland Arnold Thomas.  She was married to Bill Pentland when the show began in 1988, then dumped him for Tom Arnold circa 1990, then divorced him and married Benjamin Thomas, her then bodyguard and later the father of her baby.

Q:  What was The Conners' address?

A:  714 Delaware Street was mentioned in a couple of episodes:  2.15 and 6.06.

Q:  What are your thoughts of the final episode?

A:   If you haven't seen the final episode yet, you might not want to view my answer to this question.  Otherwise, click here to view my response.
