Classic Prog-Rock
Gentle Giant
One of the almost completely unknown bands who were a very strong influence on current prog rock. GG's style pushes all boundaries. Brilliant! It's VERY tough to find good recordings. The website has info about which releases of which albums to get.
Jethro Tull
Ian Anderson and Co. have a real knack for forming melodies which are both interesting to hear and good to hum. I especially recommend "Thick as a Brick".
Genesis
Possibly the most influential of all prog rock bands, they're still far more well known for their 1980's/1990's pop music, rather than the far better (IMHO) prog work of the early 1970's. I highly recommend "Nursery Cryme", "Selling England by the Pound", "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway", and especially "Foxtrot".
Peter Gabriel
Former Genesis lead-singer is also more well-known for his pop music than his more interesting music. PG's later music at least always seemed to keep an element of artistic integrity that Genesis seemed to lose. Nonetheless, his music has kept some prog elements, while adapting more pop influences. I'd especially suggest "Security" (I think released in Europe without a title as Peter Gabriel's fourth album).
Yes
The happy-hippie prog band. They have a long history of truly great music. Highly suggest all of "The Yes Album", "Fragile", "Close to the Edge", "Going for the One", and especially "Tales from Topographic Oceans".
Rush
Canadian group continually has a fan base that is split between prog-rock fans and hard rock/heavy metal fans. I recommend "Caress of Steel", "2112", "A Farewell to Kings", and "Hemispheres".
Steve Hackett Former Genesis guitarist, left the band in 1977 (the music was hurt when PG left in 1975 and completely tanked when SH left). One of the very few guitarists to gain critical acclaim in both the rock and classical circles.
Anthony Phillips Another former Genesis guitarist, left the band in 1970. His solo music includes a lot of great classically styled music
