General Beer Pages And BreweriesIn February of 2000, I was able to visit Prague (Praha) and Munich (München). Both had great beer, but I was astonished with the depth and brilliant flavor of Czech pivo tmavé (dark beer). If I was forced to live on a single style of beer, that would be it! Yet somehow, it is not even recognized by the BJCP (and consequentially by the AHA) as a distinct style! It gives very different flavors than the closest recognized style, München Dunkles. Still worse, you can try very few of them here in the states. Kozel is available, but it is not one of the better examples, IMHO; and it typically sits on shelves for so long that it loses much of the flavor that makes tmavé so wonderful! Staropramen (who makes a very nice tmavé) only seems to ship it's light beer to the states (regretably, Czech light beers never seem to survive the journey) For anyone who finds themseleves in Prague, check out pivovar Novomestský (my personal favorite, near Wenceslas Square [Vaclavske Namesti]) and U Fleku; (the oldest brewpub in the world, founded 1499).
