A COFFIN ANCESTRAL LINE
possibly to the
BARON SAIRE deQUINCEY
--- 1st Generation ---
1. Elizabeth Coffin was born circa 1634. She married Stephen
Greenleaf, son of Edmund Greenleaf and Sarah Dole, on 13 November 1651
in Newbury, MA.
She died on 19 November 1678 in Newbury, MA .
--- 2nd Generation ---
2. Tristram Coffin was born circa 1609 in Brixton Parish, Devonshire,
England. He was christened on 11 Mar 1610.
He married Dionis Stevens, daughter of Robert Stevens and Mrs. Robert
Stevens (--?--), circa 1630 in Brixton Parish , Devonshire, England..
He was selected in 1640 as a warden in Brixton Parish, but leased his
farm at Butlers (Butlass) for five hundred years on 6 November 1640 and
went to New England, probably on the Hector but possibly on the Margaret
Clememt or the Job Clement all owned by Robert Clement.
Robert Clement signed the Indian Deed to Haverhill with Tristram Coffin
15 November 1642. Tristram brought with him his mother and his two sisters
who were married in America, Eunice to William Butler and Mary to Alexander
Adams. Mary's daughter Elizabeth married William Parkman and from that
marriage descended the historian Framcis Parkman (1823-1893). Tristram
first settled in Haverhill, removed to Newbury in 1648, thence to Salisbury
in 1654 and in 1680 to Nantucket of which island he was one of the original
propriators. See: The Coffin Family; edited by Louis Coffin; Nantucket
Historical Assn.; Nantucket, MA.

He married Joan Thember circa 1630 in England.
He died circa 1627, probably in Brixton. His estate was probated on

called Silferhey in Butlers (now Butlass) in 1628.

17. Mary Boscawen was born 20 January 1535. She married Peter Coffin circa 1560. She died 4 September 1622 in Pankev Brixton, Devonshire, England.
Cautionary Note: The connection between Peter and Mary Boscawen Coffin and Nicholas Coffin and the line of ascent to deQuincey is very much in doubt. It was first proposed by Thomas Coffin Amory in a speech delivered at a family reunion in 1881. Since that time numerous researchers have discounted the connection. One researcher suggests that Peter and Mary Coffin had no children. Thus, you may wish to do your own verification of this and the subsequent generations. They appear in "the Magna Carta Sureties" by Arthur Adams , "The Visitations of the County of Cornwall " by Vivian and in other sources.
--- 6th Generation ---
35. Phillippa Carminow was born circa 1519 in Boconnoc,
Cornwall, England.
She married Hugh Boscawen circa 1536. She died 9 August 1593.

--- 15th Generation ---
17922. Thomas Holland was a Knight of the Garter. On 20
November 1360 he assumed the
title of Earl of Kent. . He married Joan Plantagenet, daughter of Edmund
Plantagenet, circa 1339.

circa 1360 in Co. Lincoln, England.

573522. Roger deQuincey. He held his father's estates while
his older brother Robert was
absent in the Holy Land and scceeded as Earl of Winchester in 1235.
In the same year he
became lord high constable of Scotland. Because he had no sons, the
Earldom reverted to
the crown on his death. He married Helen MacDonal, daughter of Allan
MacDonal and Margaret
David. He was born circa 1195. He died in April 1264.
--- 21st Generation ---
1147044. Saire deQuincey. He was one of the Barons present
when William the Lion of Scotland
did homage to the English Monarch in October 1200. At the beginning
of King John's reign
he was not a Baron much less a great one. However, he obtained large
grants from King John
and was created Earl of Winchester on 2 March 1207. He is credited
with rewriting Magna
Carta from the Charter of King Henry I and the Saxon Code which was
agreed to by King John
on 19 June 1215. He was one of the 24 Barons who, along with the Mayor
of London, were
sureties for the Magna Carta. He was born before 1154. He married
Margaret Bellomont before 1173.
He died on 3 November 1219 "on the way, to Jerusalem".
I would very much like to have comments, particularly about the dubious connection between Peter and Mary Boscawen Coffin and Nicholis Coffin.
